BIRTHDAYS BLOGAVERSARIES AND GIVEAWAYS

April 15, 2011
Today, one year ago, I took the big plunge and stepped out from my comfort zone over at food24.com into the big wide world of blogging. Yep, I sat here and agonized over which blog forum to go with and WordPress won that round, then it was templates templates and more templates….such confusion, photos, headers, a new blog name and all the rest that goes with starting a new blog. Sweaty palms, palpitations, thoughts of  “am I crazy? Am I doing the right thing?” Heck yes! By the time I clicked that PUBLISH button on my dashboard it was the 15th April and my new blog hatched – quite painlessly eventually! So happy blogaversary to me! I have survived the first year on WordPress. And what a long way I have come too. I now have TWO wordpress blogs to keep going, the other being FBI.

It is actually almost 3 years since I started blogging as browniegirl, under the blog title Kitchen Diary at food24.com, and I still have that blog going as well. Trying to make a concerted effort to keep it going on a more regular basis is not so easy. Since taking on the organizing of Food Blogger Indaba my blogging time has been cut ridiculously short. I think it is time to realize that my passion for something I love is turning it into something else…something like a full time job! NOT a paying full time job yet but hopefully that might come at some stage….Indaba affairs are keeping me plugging away behind the scenes every day. And sometimes I don’t have enough hours to get it all done. BUT……I do still love blogging and I need to get back to what I love! Time management is what I need to practice!!

So then, as I was saying in my previous post (which has turned out to be my most read post in the history of this blog by the way) with this being a special week in the brownie household with it being my blogaversary today…..and my birthday coming up very soon, it is the perfect time for some giveaways….the first one was Bon Appetit Mr President – the delightful cookery book from the kitchen of the personal chef to South Africa’s president, Hilton Little.

It delights me to announce that Mandy from The Complete Cook Book is the winner of this book! How appropriate! Congratulations Mandy, please either email, DM or private message me on Facebook your postal details so I can get your prize into the mail!

And now on to bigger things. Seeing as it is Friday and I am running out of time, best I get on with it and stop stringing you all along… I have the most awesome giveaway to announce today to ever come out of this blog. It is something that is at the top of my birthday wish list….all my family know that THIS is all that I want! I have to have one 🙂 I NEED one……..hope my family all read this post 🙂

HUH?? I hear your confusion……..you don’t know what this is??? Oh please….allow me to tell you all about the Philips Air Fryer! I will start with the company actually and it will all become clear as I go along….

As you may or may not know, Philips SA came on board as fantastic last minute sponsors of FBI2011  and, following up on that association, we (the brownieboy and I) were invited to the launch of their newest, innovative product. Much secrecy about it with little clues given out along the way piqued our interest and made us long for the day to arrive when we would finally see it! What a fun launch! It was wonderful meeting the folk from Jenni Newman PR who liased with me through the sponsorship, we met the MD of Philips SA who doubled up as a doorman and showed us the way in 🙂 Thank you Paul! and we met Darren Scott who is the brand ambassador for the product and found out the reason why! If you want to know more about that story Darren has a super book out called No Fries on Us! It was fantastic to see the product, handle it, taste what it cooked like and to see that this was no cock and bull story! No sirreee….that is why I want one so badly! This amazing appliance delivers!!

The new Philips AirFryer is a revolution in home cooking that doesn’t require oil in the cooking process, allowing you to fry a variety of tasty meals which are simple, healthy and fast. The AirFryer’s secret is its patented Rapid Air Technology which combines fast-circulating hot air with a grill to create chips with up to 80% less fat without compromising on taste. The Philips AirFryer cooks a variety of foods and snacks from delicious chips to chicken nuggets, veggies and even tempura. At the launch we were treated to Kataifi prawns with perfectly crisp pastry, crispy spring rolls, meatballs, chicken, fish and chips, croutons…to name a few. All perfectly cooked in minutes and HEALTHY!! I was sold! So was Chef Donald aka brownieboy!

Paul Hobden MD of Philips SA, one of their lovely young chefs at the launch and Chef Donald

The AirFryer requires no heating up time, so busy parents can quickly and easily prepare a batch of the best tasting chips in just 12 minutes. In addition, the revolutionary AirFryer overcomes the odor that traditional frying creates. Because it uses hot air rather than oil to fry food, it emits fewer vapors, while the Integrated Air Filter diffuses any smells. Cleaning up after cooking with the AirFryer is also simple, thanks to the removable, dishwasher-safe parts and non-stick surfaces.  The AirFryer features a timer which lets you pre-set cooking times of up to 30 minutes, so you can focus on other tasks while your main course is being cooked to perfection. You can also interrupt cooking to check on progress whenever you want, to ensure you get the result you want. The Adjustable Temperature Control also lets you pre-set temperatures of up to 200°C, and cooks food with steady heat to ensure crisp and even cooking. Making it even simpler to prepare every part of your meal, the Philips AirFryer includes a Food Separator Accessory which allows you to fry multiple foods at once without mixing the flavours together!

For inspiration, the AirFryer comes complete with a recipe book, and even more recipes can be found on Philips MyKitchen – a website that inspires you to cook healthy, nutritional and tasty meals for the family. A host of culinary tricks and handy time-saving tips also show you how to get amazing results effortlessly. So you can enjoy family favourites every day of the week with none of the guilt or hassle – but all the taste – of regular fried foods. With the Philips AirFryer, fried foods are healthy and delicious.

Key features include:

  • Patented Rapid Air technology – combines hot air with grill component to fry food
  • In-built Timer – lets you pre-set cooking times of up to 30 mins
  • Adjustable Temperature Control – cooks food at steady rate up to 200°C
  • Food Separator Accessory – lets you fry multiple foods at once
  • Integrated Air Filter – diffuses odors

Happy Birthday for Sunday Col. This is why I think I need that amazing thing!

It has been 12 months since I had my last fag,
And the nicotine deprivation drove me mad.
I busied my days eating french fries,
this is evident by the size of my thighs!
Love fried chips more than life itself,
but now it is time to focus on my health!

  2. April 15, 2011 2:20 PM

I used to love my TV braai
    Cooked in it everyday
    It died in the flood
    No more to be found
    I need a new best kitchen-buddy

    • April 15, 2011 5:56 PM

Sidey, I also looooooved my TV Braai!! I wonder why they don’t make it anymore! I got mine as a wedding gift in 1985!

      • April 15, 2011 9:24 PM

I think you can still get them. I got one about two years ago and it often does duty in my kitchen! xx

    Happy Blogaversary!
Simply put, I’d like to try one of these for health reasons. We are trying to get a handle on my husband’s high blood pressure and cholesterol and our overall health. We try very hard to cook healthful meals, but still crave fried food. This little gem would be such an asset in our kitchen!

    • April 15, 2011 9:34 PM

Thank you for your comment spiceblogger! I think you are over in the USA? We would unfortunately not be able to ship to the States. But thank you so much. And the AirFryer really is a gem. Have a great weekend xx

    Hello Col
Here’s my five liner as to why I believe I should win this amazing prize.

On the 8th of May the love of my life will be another year older, and I could think of nothing better than giving him what his big heart desires ~the Philips AirFryer

  11. April 15, 2011 3:31 PM

My brand new kitchen is just about done. Philips dishwasher in place all that’s missing is a philip air fryer

  12. April 15, 2011 3:36 PM

Happy Birthday for Sunday Twitter friend!
I hope that you have a super special day and all your dreams come true!

Ok, So why do I deserve the Phillips air fryer…

    I’m a busy, multi-tasking mom. That’s why!
It will certainly help me on days when my children have after school activities ie. When I’ve been playing mom’s taxi.
Homework needs to be done – so it would be lovely to allow this gadget to do its work
While I give my undivided attention to my children.

    I think that’s it…
    Thanks Colly and Phillips

Thank you so much for your comment and birthday wishes Twitter friend 🙂

  13. April 15, 2011 3:44 PM

Too much oil increased my size
The Philips air fryer might prevent my demise.
Not to be as thin as a pole but to have some control.
So Colly Wolly please help me reach my goal.

  14. April 15, 2011 3:49 PM

I’m 50 years old and have never been able to cook to save my life
Which may be the sad reason why I’ve never been somebody’s wife
Now the doctor is trying to make me lose weight with countless situps
While bringing my cholesterol down with the air-fryer from Phillips

Am I not a worthy recipient of this amazing product?

    *grin*

Happy happy happy birthday you wonderful woman – I hope you got spoilt rotten!

    • April 15, 2011 9:38 PM

When I first heard about this fryer I though I gotta have one! How awesome to be able to still eat those chips and fried thing but not have to worry about all that oil! Colly I hope you have an awesome birthday and not only get to give one of these away but you also get to keep one!

When the stars do align, I have time out of mind
To cook food for my hub, and then walk my mutt.

But more often than not, I work late
And the hubs gets a sandwich on a plate.

Just think about what I could do,
With a Philips Air Fryer.. I could cook and write poetry too!

Right, Colly, that’s the first poetry I’ve written in 10 years, I hope I’m in the running – maybe then I’d be able to practise my writing and cook at the same time!

love and many happy birthdays for you and your darling blog!

  19. April 15, 2011 4:54 PM

Wishing you birthday blessings and all you so richly deserve! I would love to win this awesome prize, not for my but for my sister who is the mother of the most beautiful nieces any aunty could wish for! ‘Dougie, come talk to me again when your arteries are clogged HAHA! This is a new day….a new slap chip is born. Talking of newspaper…they actually served some up wrapped in paper…you could still read the print on the paper…no oily grease to wash it away :)’
Surely YOU do not want to be the cause of my untimely demise!

  21. April 15, 2011 5:10 PM

Firstly, hearty congrats on your blog’s birthday, our blogs are now – officially – twin sisters.
Secondly, after the amount of noise you’ve made for them, Philips should give you a fryer too.
Thirdly, my husband was diagnosed with chronic cholesetrol problems last year, which has really changed the way he lives and I cook. I dearly miss some of my fried dishes and would love to be able to make them again, in a healthier way.
Fourthly, my maiden name was Phillips, does that count?

    Hey Col,

Firstly let me wish you a fantastic birthday for tomorrow, hope the wind calms down a bit so that you do not get blown away (well by anything other than your birfday prezzies). May the year ahead be kind to you and yours.

    Secondly, thanks for giving away a prezzie for your birthday… isn’t it just a great feeling ;}}

Why I should win the giveaway is more of why I NEED to win it… I am moving again at the end of the month, and have NO WAY of cooking anything, not even a microwave as mine gave up the ghost after about 18 years… also, moving into a room, so no place for anything big there….

Good luck to all, and a great weekend to all.

    Namaste

A Real Man eats whatever he wants, to hell with kilos of joules.

Now as to why I want to win the Airfryer….

Being a Chef, my lovely fiancée often has to eat alone at home
This would be perfect to make healthy quick meals for those nights I am
stuck at work…so you will be doing him a huge favor (and me) by keeping
him away from those fast food joints!

I would love to win this Air Fryer. What else can I say. We try to use fats very sparingly and this would be the perfect device for my family. We are all trying desperately to lose weight to so this would also help with that. Plus I have had such a run of bad luck some good luck would be a pleasant change.

Happy blogaversary browniegirl! You’ve done such amazing thigs for the food blogging community, thank you for all your hard work, the community definitely wouldn’t be so strong without you!

Just like a Haiku uses very few words to get a poem across, the Phillips AirFryer uses no oil to create delicious fried food. So here is a Haiku to aid my chances in winning one!

My sister is gorgeous, witty and more
She’s clever and loving – has talent galore
So if motivation is what you require,
Just being Brownie’s sister should win the Air Fryer

    My arteries are clogging
    My behind has spread
My love for things oily now fills me with dread
As old age beckons my situation is dire
I have to win me a Philips AirFryer.

The ad was convincing, the jingle would say “what did you do with your Philips today”
Audio, visual, baking products galore – I bought them all and just wanted more.
Philips you made me a compulsive buyer, now please can I win the sexy Air Fryer ?

    • April 18, 2011 12:31 AM

It is rather sexy isn’t it Corrie? Especially the black one……

Oh my hat, I nearly missed this!!! that would have been terrible. But here I am, Happy Birthday Soulsista, yet again. Lovely to chat to you today.

I bless the day that you started blogging, because it brought us together, it made us friends for life. “Sy is nie sommer `n ou voetsek nie, sy`s my maatijie”.

Now I must just tell you that my kitchen here in KZN is Black and White and that Air Fryer will look just too darling on my counter, and it will stop Dennis from stopping at KFC ever so often to buy chips. HEEHEE.

Ever the sceptic and cynic I am willing to put this baby through it’s paces. And it’s just in time.
With Ramadaan round the corner, I can see me filling my Samoosas and getting to actually eat it. As luck would have it, my Birthday is on the 27th April – so I guess it is the right thing to do for you to pass your gift on over to me. You can have the day off in return.

    Happy Birthday and Happy Blogiversary!

I’ve resisted many temptations to buy a deep-fat fryer over the years simply because I knew I’d consume more calories as a result. The cleaning up afterwards was another consideration. But this…this changes the game! I would love one!

Happy happy birthday again Brownigirl. I don’t feel worthy of this wonderful deep fryer, but I’m thinking it might even help me to cook more adventerous foody items. Would be naaaice!
    xx
PS great thing is I can still eat chips. Now chips with less fat would be a goodie since I seem to consume more of those these days. My comfort food for not being able to eat the “glue” you see…..YES infact I can see that fitting in my kitchen really well.

I really could do with the Philips Air Fryer
To haul my family out of the oily quagmire!

Sounds too good to be true but will trust Colleen’s word on this fab sounding appliance.
